Andrew Wiggins

Andrew Wiggins was born on February 23, 1995, in Toronto, Ontario, Canada, and raised in the nearby Vaughan portion of Thornhill. The son of former NBA player Mitchell Wiggins and Olympic track and field sprinter Marita Payne-Wiggins, Andrew began playing organized basketball at age nine. He quickly showed promise, with his athleticism leading to a significant growth spurt and a memorable glass backboard shattering incident at age 14. Wiggins attended Vaughan Secondary School for his first two years of high school, leading the team to a 44-1 record and an Ontario provincial championship in 2010–11. He later transferred to Huntington Prep School in West Virginia, where he reclassified to the class of 2013 and became a highly touted national prospect. He averaged 24.2 points, 8.5 rebounds, 4.1 assists, and 2.7 blocks in his junior year, and 23.4 points, 11.2 rebounds, 2.6 blocks, and 2.5 assists as a senior. Wiggins was widely recognized, earning titles such as the 2013 Naismith Prep Player of the Year, Gatorade National Player of the Year, and Mr. Basketball USA.

Wiggins committed to the University of Kansas on May 14, 2013. During his single season with the Kansas Jayhawks, he averaged 17.1 points, 5.9 rebounds, and shot 34.1% from three-point range. He was named a second-team consensus All-American and a Top 25 Finalist for the John R. Wooden Men’s Player of the Year award. His performance led to him being selected as the first overall pick in the 2014 NBA Draft by the Cleveland Cavaliers, becoming the second Canadian to achieve this distinction. Shortly after, Wiggins was traded to the Minnesota Timberwolves, where he immediately made an impact, earning NBA Rookie of the Month honors for the first two months of the season and ultimately being named the NBA Rookie of the Year for the 2014–15 season. He continued to develop his scoring abilities, recording career highs with multiple 30-point games, including a 47-point performance against the Los Angeles Lakers in November 2016.

After five and a half seasons with the Minnesota Timberwolves, Wiggins was traded to the Golden State Warriors in 2020. With the Warriors, he expanded his game, focusing on defensive contributions and efficient scoring. In the 2021–22 season, Wiggins earned his first NBA All-Star selection, being voted as a Western Conference starter. He played a crucial role in the Warriors’ 2022 NBA Championship victory, showcasing significant contributions in scoring, rebounding, and defense, especially during the NBA Finals. In February 2025, Wiggins was traded to the Miami Heat as part of a five-team deal, marking a new chapter in his professional career and continuing his journey as a prominent figure in the NBA.
