Ann Reinking made her professional debut with The Royal Ballet in Giselle before moving to New York City, where she joined the corps de ballet at Radio City Music Hall. She subsequently performed in a national tour of Fiddler on the Roof and made her Broadway debut in Cabaret. Her early Broadway credits also included ensemble roles in Coco (1969), Wild and Wonderful (1971), and Pippin (1972). Reinking garnered significant critical attention for her role as Maggie in Over Here!
Her collaboration with Fosse extended to film, with her debut as Katie Jagger in his Academy Award-winning film All That Jazz (1979). Reinking further expanded her filmography with roles such as Grace Farrell in Annie (1982) and Micki Salinger in Micki & Maude (1984). She returned to the Broadway stage in 1986, taking over the lead in a revival of Fosses Sweet Charity. Reinking’s career evolved to include a strong focus on choreography and education.
Building on her choreographic success, Reinking co-created, co-directed, and co-choreographed the critically acclaimed revue Fosse in 1998, earning a Tony Award co-nomination for Best Direction of a Musical. The production’s West End transfer in 2000 garnered her an Olivier Award for Best Theatre Choreographer in 2001. Throughout her career, Reinking continued to contribute to new ballets and served on the advising committee for the American Theatre Wing. Her significant contributions to the arts were recognized with an honorary doctorate from Florida State University in 2001, cementing her legacy as a versatile and influential figure in American theatre.
