Joseph Anthony Mantegna, Jr. was born on November 13, 1947, in Chicago, Illinois. He pursued his education in acting at the Goodman School of Drama. Mantegna began his professional acting career on stage in 1969 with a role in the Chicago production of the musical ‘Hair’. This early experience laid the foundation for a career that would include extensive work in theater before his transition to film and television. His work on stage led to a significant collaboration with playwright David Mamet, which would characterize an important part of his early career.
Mantegna gained critical acclaim and a Tony Award for Best Featured Actor in a Play for his portrayal of Richard Roma in David Mamet’s Pulitzer Prize-winning play ‘Glengarry Glen Ross’.
