About

Anthony Harris Bennett was born on March 14, 1993, in Toronto, Ontario, Canada. He was raised in Toronto before moving to Brampton, Ontario, at age 10. His mother, Edith Bennett, a nurse originally from Jamaica, raised him and his older siblings as a single mother, working two jobs. As a teenager, Bennett relocated to Beckley, West Virginia, to play basketball for Mountain State Academy, and later to Henderson, Nevada for Findlay Prep. He was recognized as a top prospect, ranked as the #1 forward and #7 player overall in the high school class of 2012 by ESPNU. He committed to the University of Nevada, Las Vegas (UNLV) for his college career.

During his sole season at UNLV (2012–2013), Bennett played 35 games, primarily as a power forward, occasionally shifting to small forward. He maintained averages of 16.1 points and 8.1 rebounds per game over 27.1 minutes, despite dealing with a shoulder injury that sometimes led to reduced minutes and bench appearances. He showcased an efficient shooting record with 53.3% from the field and 37.5% from three-point range. Following his freshman year, Bennett declared for the NBA draft in April 2013, foregoing his remaining college eligibility. In May 2013, he underwent elective surgery for sleep apnea and asthma, a health issue that had been a factor in his career.

Bennett’s professional career began when he was selected as the first overall pick by the Cleveland Cavaliers in the 2013 NBA draft, making him the first Canadian to achieve this distinction. He signed a 2-year, $10.9 million rookie scale contract with the Cavaliers in August 2013. His rookie season presented challenges, as he did not score a field goal until his fifth NBA game and struggled to consistently perform at a high level. However, he gradually showed improvement, recording his first double-figure scoring game in January 2014 and his first career double-double with 19 points and 10 rebounds in February 2014. He finished the 2013–2014 season averaging 4.2 points and 3.0 rebounds per game.
