Aza Raskin, born on February 1, 1984, in California, is an American computer programmer and interface designer. He is the son of Jef Raskin, who was instrumental in the Macintosh project at Apple. Aza Raskin holds bachelor’s degrees in mathematics and physics from the University of Chicago. Early in his career, he worked with his father at the Raskin Center for Humane Interfaces on the Archy software (2004). After his father’s passing, he founded Humanized in 2005, continuing the Archy paradigm and developing the Enso software. Raskin is also recognized for discovering the tabnabbing phishing attack. His personal projects include Algorithm Ink, which generates art from formal grammar. He has advocated for iterative governance, appearing on the cover of Wired UK.
In 2008, Raskin and his Humanized team joined Mozilla Corporation, where he became head of user experience at Mozilla Labs. He was appointed creative lead for Firefox in 2010, contributing to projects such as Ubiquity and Firefox for mobile. Raskin also developed the original specification for the geolocation API. Notably, he introduced Tab Candy, later known as Firefox Panorama, which aimed to organize browser tabs spatially (2010). Beyond Mozilla, Raskin founded Songza, a music meta-search tool acquired by Amie Street in 2008, which later powered features for Google Play. He also co-founded Bloxes, which produced cardboard furniture.
Raskin left Mozilla in 2010 to co-launch Massive Health, a startup focused on applying design principles to health (2010). This company was later acquired by Jawbone in 2013. In 2017, he co-founded the Earth Species Project, a non-profit dedicated to using AI to decipher non-human communication. He is also a co-founder of the Center for Humane Technology, an organization promoting ethical technology use. His work includes co-hosting the podcast “Your Undivided Attention” and involvement with the World Economic Forum’s Global Artificial Intelligence Counsel.
