About

Bill Bryson is an American-British journalist and author, celebrated for his non-fiction works on travel, language, and science. His contributions have been recognized with numerous awards and positions, including Chancellor of Durham University and an Honorary Fellow of the Royal Society. After establishing a successful career in journalism, serving as chief copy editor of the business section for The Times and deputy national news editor of the business section for The Independent, Bill Bryson published his debut work, The Penguin Dictionary of Troublesome Words in 1984. He quickly gained recognition for his distinctive non-fiction style, releasing acclaimed travelogues such as The Lost Continent: Travels in Small-Town America (1989) and Neither Here nor There: Travels in Europe (1992), alongside language-focused titles including The Mother Tongue: English and How It Got That Way (1990) and Made in America (1994).

In 2006, he was made an Honorary Officer of the Order of the British Empire (OBE) for his significant literary work. His body of work expanded to include the memoir The Life and Times of the Thunderbolt Kid: Travels Through My Childhood (2006) and the historical biography Shakespeare: The World as Stage (2007). Bryson received the President’s Award from the Royal Society of Chemistry in 2005 and the James Joyce Award in 2007, further solidifying his critical acclaim. He was appointed president of the Campaign to Protect Rural England in 2007, a position he held until 2013, championing environmental causes.

Across his celebrated career, Bill Bryson has sold over 16 million books worldwide, consistently engaging a broad audience with his accurate research and approachable narrative style.
