Bill Engvall

William Ray Engvall Jr. was born on July 27, 1957, in Galveston, Texas. His early life involved moves between Galveston, Winslow, Arizona, and Dallas, Texas. After graduating from Richardson High School, Engvall attended Southwestern University with intentions of becoming a teacher. However, he left college without completing his degree and worked various jobs, including a tour guide and a nightclub DJ in Dallas. It was during his time as a DJ that he began exploring stand-up comedy at amateur and open mic nights, setting the foundation for his future career.

In 1990, Bill Engvall relocated to Southern California to pursue comedy full-time. He gained early recognition by hosting “A Pair of Jokers” with Rosie O’Donnell and appearing on “The Golden Palace.” He also hosted A&E Networks’ “An Evening at The Improv” and performed stand-up on “The Tonight Show Starring Johnny Carson” and “Late Show with David Letterman.” A significant turning point occurred in 1992 when he was named Best Male Standup at the American Comedy Awards. This led to his first series regular role in the ABC series “Delta,” starring Delta Burke. Although the show lasted only one season, Engvall continued to build his career through comedy clubs and television appearances.

Engvall’s career saw substantial growth in 1996 when he was cast alongside Jeff Foxworthy in the NBC version of “The Jeff Foxworthy Show.” That same year, he signed with Warner Records and released his debut comedy album, “Here’s Your Sign,” which achieved Platinum certification and peaked at number 5 on the Billboard Country album chart. This album featured his popular catchphrase and even spawned a musical track remix, “Here’s Your Sign (Get the Picture)” with Travis Tritt, which charted on both the Hot Country Songs and Billboard Hot 100. He continued to release successful albums such as “Dorkfish” (1998) and “Here’s Your Christmas Album” (1999). In 2000, Engvall, along with Jeff Foxworthy, launched the Blue Collar Comedy Tour, which also featured Ron White and Larry the Cable Guy. This tour became a significant success, leading to films, a satellite radio show, and “Blue Collar TV” on The WB Network. Engvall also starred in “The Bill Engvall Show” from 2007 to 2009, hosted the game show “Lingo” in 2011, and competed on “Dancing with the Stars” in 2013, finishing in fourth place. He pursued a degree in Christian Studies from Grand Canyon University, graduating in 2021. After announcing his retirement from stand-up in 2021 with his “Here’s Your Sign, It’s Finally Time” farewell tour, he performed his final show in Salt Lake City on December 30, 2022. However, he announced a return to comedy with a new show scheduled for September 2025 at the Treasure Island Resort and Casino in Welch, Minnesota.
