Robert Edward Collins was born and raised in New York City, specifically Glen Oaks, Queens. He is the son of George and Margaret Collins and has two older brothers and one older sister. Collins attended New Hyde Park Memorial High School on Long Island before pursuing a degree in history from the State University of New York at Buffalo. After completing his degree, he taught high school as a substitute teacher in Buffalo for one year. Subsequently, he worked in the Garment District in New York City with Calvin Klein, while simultaneously beginning his career in comedy at night. He was named after Bob Hope, his father’s favorite comedian.
Collins began his comedy career at Catch a Rising Star Comedy Club on the Upper East Side of New York City, before performing across the city and in New Jersey. His career progressed to opening for a range of established artists including Frank Sinatra, Cher, Julio Iglesias, Tony Bennett, and Dolly Parton. Collins transitioned into television, hosting VH-1’s Standup Spotlight as Rosie O’Donnell’s successor. He also made appearances in films, such as the 2010 documentary “I Am Comic.”
Throughout his career, Collins has maintained an active touring schedule, performing over 200 live stand-up shows annually across the United States as of 2011. He regularly performs on XM Satellite Radio. He has released six comedy albums: “I’m on the Boat,” “Women and Children First,” “On the Inside,” “I Wanna Go Home,” “You’re Not Coming With Us,” “Mr. New York,” and “Out of Bounds.” In April 2008, he released a DVD titled “Bobby Collins: Live From New York City.” Currently residing in Santa Monica, California, Collins frequently incorporates the cultural differences between New York and Santa Monica into his comedic routines.
