Brad Fittler

Born on February 5, 1972, in Auburn, New South Wales, Brad Fittler, also known as ‘Freddy,’ embarked on a distinguished rugby league career that spanned over 16 seasons. Fittler began his first-grade career with the Penrith Panthers in 1989 while still in high school. He quickly established himself as a prominent player, contributing to the Panthers’ Grand Final win in 1991. Fittler also became the youngest NSW State of Origin player at 18 years and 114 days and was part of the Australian Schoolboys representative teams in 1988 and 1989. His early career saw him selected for Kangaroo Tours in 1990 and 1994, showcasing his rapid ascent in the sport.

In 1996, Fittler transitioned to the Sydney Roosters, where he would solidify his legacy. He captained the team to a Premiership victory in 2002 and led them to subsequent Grand Final appearances in 2003 and 2004 before his retirement as a player in 2004. During his playing tenure, Fittler accumulated several individual awards, including multiple Dally M positional awards and the prestigious Golden Boot award in 2000, recognizing him as the world’s best player. He consistently performed at the highest levels of the sport, captaining Australia in 20 Tests for 17 victories and leading New South Wales in 14 State of Origin matches, winning eight.

Following his playing retirement, Fittler transitioned into coaching, notably leading the Sydney Roosters from 2007 to 2009. His coaching career also includes successful stints with the New South Wales State of Origin team, where he secured three series victories. Fittler’s contributions to rugby league were recognized with his induction into the National Rugby League Hall of Fame in 2008 and the Sport Australia Hall of Fame in 2022. He has also engaged in media work, including co-hosting ‘The Sunday Footy Show’ and acting as a commentator, further cementing his presence within the rugby league community.
