Brandon Carr was born on May 19, 1986, in Flint, Michigan. He attended Carman-Ainsworth High School, where he excelled as a two-way player, recording 53 tackles and 2 interceptions at cornerback, alongside 24 receptions for 431 yards and four touchdowns as a wide receiver in his senior year. He was recognized for his performance by being named to the All-conference defensive team. Following high school, Carr continued his football career at Division II Grand Valley State, playing in 49 games and starting 41. During his time there, he accumulated 206 tackles (147 solo) and 11 interceptions, alongside 39 pass deflections. He was a part of the teams that won back-to-back NCAA Division II Football Championships in his sophomore and junior years. In his senior year, he recorded 45 tackles, two interceptions, and 13 defended passes, earning the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Defensive Back of the Year honor in 2007.
Carr entered the NFL after being selected by the Kansas City Chiefs in the fifth round (140th overall) of the 2008 NFL Draft, becoming the highest-drafted player from Grand Valley State. He quickly made an impact, starting 16 games in his rookie season and recording 73 combined tackles, six pass deflections, and two interceptions. His consistent performance led to him signing a five-year, $50.10 million contract with the Dallas Cowboys in 2012, where he continued his streak of consecutive starts. During his tenure with the Cowboys, in 2012, he achieved his first NFL touchdown by returning an interception for 47 yards against the Philadelphia Eagles. In 2016, he agreed to a pay cut to remain with the Cowboys, and his performance saw a resurgence after being moved to the right outside cornerback position, a role he excelled in earlier in his career. In 2017, Carr signed a four-year, $23.50 million contract with the Baltimore Ravens, extending his consecutive start streak to 160 games. He concluded his career with a second stint at the Dallas Cowboys in 2020.
Throughout his NFL career, Carr demonstrated remarkable durability and consistency, evidenced by playing 195 games and starting 192. He accumulated 703 total tackles, 3 sacks, 1 forced fumble, 9 fumble recoveries, 21 interceptions, and 2 defensive touchdowns. Beyond his on-field achievements, Carr established the Carr Cares Foundation in December 2012, which focuses on educational enrichment and physical fitness for youth. This initiative reflects his commitment to giving back to the community through literacy and sports programs, impacting students in Dallas, Baltimore, and his hometown of Flint, Michigan.
