Brenden Russell Aaronson was born on October 22, 2000, in Medford, New Jersey. His early career began in the Philadelphia Union Academy, where he played from 2015 to 2018. During this period, he also featured for Bethlehem Steel FC, making 21 appearances and scoring one goal from 2017 to 2018. Aaronson officially joined the Philadelphia Union first team in 2019, signing a homegrown contract in 2018. In his two seasons with the Union, he recorded seven goals and nine assists in 51 matches. His performance in 2020 was particularly notable, contributing to the club’s Supporters’ Shield victory and earning him a spot in the MLS Best XI.
In January 2021, Aaronson transferred to Austrian Bundesliga club Red Bull Salzburg. During his time there, he tallied nine goals and nine assists in 45 league matches. He played a key role in the club’s success, helping them secure back-to-back Austrian League and Cup doubles in the 2020-21 and 2021-22 seasons. His strong performances led to a move to English Premier League club Leeds United on May 26, 2022, for a reported transfer fee of $30 million. He scored his first Premier League goal on August 21, 2022, against Chelsea. For the 2023-24 season, Aaronson was loaned to Bundesliga side Union Berlin, and returned to Leeds United for the 2024-25 season, contributing significantly to their promotion back to the Premier League with a career-high nine goals and two assists.
Aaronson has also been a consistent presence for the United States national team, making his debut at age 19 in February 2020. He has appeared in 54 matches for the USMNT, scoring nine goals. His international career highlights include scoring his first goal against El Salvador in December 2020, leading the team with seven goal contributions in 2021, and participating in the 2022 FIFA World Cup. He also played a vital role in the USMNT winning the CONCACAF Nations League in 2019-20, 2022-23, and 2023-24.
