About

Caterina Marianna Banti was born on June 13, 1987, in Rome, Italy. She began her sailing career at the age of 16, a comparatively late start compared to many of her peers. Despite this, she quickly developed her skills, training at the Circolo Canottieri Aniene in Rome, starting with dinghies and Lasers before moving to the Hobie class. Banti pursued academic endeavors while developing her athletic career, earning a degree in foreign languages and Islamic studies from La Sapienza University. This academic background contributed to a broader perspective, earning her the description ‘a force on the water, a philosopher at heart.’ Her international career began in 2013 when she first competed in the Nacra 17 class, ahead of its Olympic debut.

Banti’s career saw a significant turning point in 2017 when she partnered with Ruggero Tita. This collaboration proved to be highly successful, leading to a bronze medal at the 2017 Nacra 17 World Championship in La Grande-Motte, followed by a gold medal at the 2018 Aarhus World Championships. The pair achieved multiple European Championship titles in the Nacra 17 class. The pinnacle of their partnership came at the Tokyo 2020 Summer Olympics, where they won the gold medal in the mixed multihull class, becoming the first Italian male and female athletes to achieve this feat together. They successfully defended their Olympic title at the Paris 2024 Summer Olympics, securing a second gold medal. Throughout their collaboration, Tita and Banti consistently ranked among the top, winning three successive World Championship golds following their initial Olympic victory.

Banti’s approach to sailing is characterized by her belief in the core values of sportsmanship and fun, particularly for young athletes. She emphasizes personal growth in addition to athletic achievement. The unpredictability of the sea is also a significant appeal for her, as it continuously challenges physical and mental limits. In September 2024, at the age of 37, Banti announced her retirement from competitive sailing, choosing to conclude her career immediately following her second Olympic gold medal. She expressed a desire to remain involved in sports, aiming to impart her knowledge and experiences.
