Chazz Palminteri

Calogero Lorenzo Palminteri, known professionally as Chazz Palminteri, was born on May 15, 1952, in the Bronx, New York. Growing up in a challenging environment in the Belmont neighborhood, these early experiences significantly influenced his later work. He pursued acting, studying at the Actor’s Studio starting in 1973, and performed in off-Broadway productions during the early 1980s. During this period, he supported himself with various jobs including working as a bouncer and doorman in nightclubs.

Palminteri’s career began to gain traction in the late 1980s, primarily in television roles that leveraged his ethnic streetwise persona. He appeared in TV shows such as “Wiseguy” (1987), “Matlock” (1986), and “Hill Street Blues” (1981). A turning point in his career came in 1988 when he wrote and performed his autobiographical one-man stage play, “A Bronx Tale.” This powerful piece, detailing his childhood and encounters with gangland figures, featured Palminteri portraying 18 different characters. His dedication to this project led him to refuse lucrative offers for film rights unless he was included as both screenwriter and actor.

His persistence paid off when Robert De Niro saw the play and championed its adaptation into a film. “A Bronx Tale” (1993), directed by De Niro and starring Palminteri as Sonny, brought him widespread recognition. The following year, he received an Academy Award nomination for Best Supporting Actor for his role as Cheech in Woody Allen’s “Bullets Over Broadway” (1994). Palminteri continued to build a notable filmography with roles in critically acclaimed movies like “The Usual Suspects” (1995) and diversified his work to include directing, producing, and voice acting in animated films. He has also maintained a strong presence in television, with recurring roles in “Modern Family” (2010–2019) and “Rizzoli & Isles” (2010–2014), among others.
