United States Chris Petersen is a decorated collegiate football coach known for his strategic leadership and commitment to academic excellence, having transitioned from a successful playing career to building winning programs at both Boise State and the University of Washington.
The University of Washington, under Chris Petersen's leadership, announced a 10-year agreement to make Adidas the official athletic footwear and apparel partner. Petersen expressed excitement about the partnership, believing it would significantly benefit student-athletes and help the program advance.
Chris Petersen, along with other UW donors and supporters, launched Montlake Futures, an NIL (Name, Image, Likeness) company. Local companies such as Alaska Airlines, Amazon, Costco, and Nordstrom publicly endorsed this initiative, aiming to provide unique opportunities for student-athletes.
Born Christopher Scott Petersen on October 13, 1964, in Yuba City, California, Chris Petersen established a substantial career in college football, first as a player and then as a highly respected head coach. His playing career included stints as a quarterback at Sacramento City College and UC Davis, where he also earned a bachelor’s degree in psychology and a master’s in educational psychology. Petersen set several records at UC Davis for completion percentage and was named his conference’s Player of the Year and UC Davis’ Male Athlete of the Year in his senior season, being inducted into the Cal Aggie Athletic Hall of Fame in 1997. His coaching journey began in 1987 as a freshman coach at UC Davis, progressing through assistant roles at the University of Pittsburgh, Portland State University, and the University of Oregon. These early experiences laid the groundwork for his future success, particularly in developing offensive strategies, with his Oregon teams seeing multiple wide receivers achieve over 1,000 receiving yards in a season.
Petersen’s leadership significantly impacted two major programs: Boise State and the University of Washington. From 2006 to 2013, as head coach at Boise State, he achieved a remarkable 92-12 record, guiding the Broncos to five conference championships and two undefeated seasons (13-0 in 2006 and 14-0 in 2009). The 2007 Fiesta Bowl victory against Oklahoma is particularly noted for his bold play-calling. In 2014, he took over as head coach for the University of Washington, where he led the Huskies to a 55-26 record and two Pac-12 Conference titles in 2016 and 2018. Under his guidance, Washington made its only College Football Playoff appearance in 2016 and participated in New Year’s Six bowl games for three consecutive seasons (Peach Bowl 2016, Fiesta Bowl 2017, Rose Bowl 2018). Beyond on-field achievements, Petersen was recognized for leading teams to high levels of academic success, spearheading initiatives that resulted in the highest four-year Academic Progress Rate (APR) score in major-college football history at the UW program for 2015-2018.
