Chris Pine was born Christopher Whitelaw Pine on August 26, 1980, in Los Angeles, California, into a family deeply rooted in the entertainment industry. His parents, Robert Pine and Gwynne Gilford, were both actors, and his maternal grandmother was Hollywood actress Anne Gwynne. Pine attended Oakwood School and later earned a Bachelor of Arts in English from the University of California, Berkeley in 2002. During his time at Berkeley, he developed an interest in theater, performing in various university productions. He also spent a year studying at the University of Leeds in the United Kingdom and honed his acting skills at the American Conservatory Theater in San Francisco. Pine began his acting career with guest roles in television series such as ‘ER’ (2003), ‘The Guardian’ (2003), and ‘CSI: Miami’ (2003).
Pine’s feature film debut came in 2004, starring opposite Anne Hathaway in ‘The Princess Diaries 2: Royal Engagement’. Building on this, he appeared in romantic comedy ‘Just My Luck’ (2006) alongside Lindsay Lohan and the action film ‘Smokin’ Aces’ (2007). A significant turning point in his career arrived in 2009 when he was cast as James T. Kirk in J.J. Abrams’ ‘Star Trek’ reboot, a role that propelled him to international prominence. He subsequently reprised this role in ‘Star Trek Into Darkness’ (2013) and ‘Star Trek Beyond’ (2016). Pine continued to take on diverse projects, including ‘Unstoppable’ (2010) with Denzel Washington, a voice role as Jack Frost in ‘Rise of the Guardians’ (2012), and the action-thriller ‘Jack Ryan: Shadow Recruit’ (2014).
In recent years, Pine has maintained a consistent presence in both mainstream and independent cinema. He earned critical acclaim for his performance in the neo-western ‘Hell or High Water’ (2016), which Clayton Davis of Variety noted as his best to date. Pine further solidified his status with his role as Steve Trevor in the highly successful superhero film ‘Wonder Woman’ (2017) and its sequel ‘Wonder Woman 1984’ (2020). Other notable projects include ‘Outlaw King’ (2018), ‘Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse’ (2018), ‘Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves’ (2023), and his directorial debut ‘Poolman’ (2023), in which he also starred. He is scheduled to appear in the Italian film ‘The Kidnapping of Arabella’ in 2025.
