Finland Christopher Gibson is a professional ice hockey goaltender with a career spanning various leagues, including the NHL. He has consistently demonstrated resilience and skill throughout his progression from junior hockey to the highest levels of the sport.
Christopher Gibson was born on December 27, 1992, in Karkkila, Finland. He spent his early years in Espoo, Finland, before moving to Saskatchewan, Canada, at the age of 15 to attend Notre Dame College. During his first season there, he contributed to the midget AAA team winning the Telus Cup national championship in 2009. His junior career continued in the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League (QMJHL) with the Chicoutimi Saguenéens, where he was drafted as the first goaltender in the 2009 Canadian Hockey League import draft. His performance consistently earned him recognition, culminating in his selection as the top goaltender from the QMJHL prior to the 2011 NHL Entry Draft.
Gibson was drafted by the Los Angeles Kings in the second round, 49th overall, in the 2011 NHL Entry Draft. Despite being drafted, he did not sign with the Kings and instead signed with the Toronto Maple Leafs on July 19, 2013, embarking on his professional journey. He split the 2013-14 season between the Orlando Solar Bears of the ECHL and the Toronto Marlies of the American Hockey League (AHL). The following season, 2014-15, he played entirely in the AHL for the Toronto Marlies, recording 24 wins, a 2.42 goals-against average, and a .921 save percentage. He was traded to the New York Islanders on September 17, 2015, which marked a significant turning point in his career.
His NHL debut with the Islanders came on January 2, 2016, in relief. Christopher Gibson earned his first NHL start and win on April 6, 2016, against the Washington Capitals, where he made 29 saves in an overtime victory that secured a playoff spot for the Islanders. A notable professional achievement includes a 50-save performance against the Calgary Flames on March 11, 2018, making him the first Islanders rookie goaltender to achieve this since 1972. Beyond the Islanders, he has played for the Tampa Bay Lightning, Florida Panthers (affiliate Charlotte Checkers), Seattle Kraken (affiliate Coachella Valley Firebirds), and currently H.C. Nové Zámky in the Slovak Extraliga, and previously for Lukko in the Finnish Liiga, showcasing a diverse and enduring career in professional hockey.
