Christopher Hart was born on February 22, 1961, in Nanaimo, British Columbia, Canada. He later moved to Los Angeles, where he was educated in Catholic schools. His interest in magic began at the age of eight after he discovered a magic book at a local library. This early fascination was further encouraged by the television series “The Magician.” His dedication to magic led him to join the Magic Castle’s junior program at sixteen, an exclusive opportunity requiring extensive auditioning and interviewing. During his teenage years, Hart took on various jobs, including working as a grave digger at a cemetery, where his tall and lanky build earned him the nickname ‘Lurch’.
Recognizing that graveyard work was not a long-term career path, Hart transitioned to demonstrating tricks at Hollywood Magic, which was the largest magic shop on the West Coast. This role provided him with opportunities to perform for notable figures such as Michael Jackson, Johnny Carson, and Muhammad Ali. His reputation as a magician grew, leading him to work with David Copperfield, initially as a ‘Magic Roadie’. Copperfield continued to collaborate with Hart on several live and television shows, including the notable Great Wall of China special, impressed by Hart’s extensive knowledge and skills in the field of magic. Hart’s expertise in sleight-of-hand magic has also been featured in national television commercials for various brands.
Throughout his career, Hart has been recognized for his contributions to the magic community, receiving the “Stage Magician of the Year” award twice from Hollywood’s Magic Castle. He was also personally awarded the top prize at the Grand Prix Magique in Monte Carlo by Princess Stéphanie of Monaco. In film, Hart is most recognized for his role as Thing, the disembodied hand, in “The Addams Family” (1991), “Addams Family Values” (1993), and “Addams Family Reunion” (1998). He also played the role of ‘The Hand’ in the 1999 film “Idle Hands” and ‘The Hands’ in an episode of the TV series “Angel” in 1999. His unique physical acting style, particularly his ability to convey emotion and character through hand movements, became a distinctive trademark of his performances.
