Chua Lam

Chua Lam was a prolific Hong Kong columnist, acclaimed food critic, and former film producer, known for his distinguished contributions across culinary, media, and film industries in Asia. After making his literary debut by publishing his first article in Nanyang Siang Pau in 1955, Chua Lam went on to build an expansive career across film, media, and culinary industries in Asia. He honed his craft studying film directing at Nihon University in Tokyo, Japan, while simultaneously gaining practical experience working part-time for Shaw Brothers Studio as a manager and translator. In 1963, Chua Lam relocated to Hong Kong, continuing his tenure with Shaw Brothers Studio as a production manager.

His career took a significant turn when he joined Golden Harvest, serving as vice-president of film production for two decades, where he produced numerous iconic films, including blockbuster hits for Jackie Chan such as ‘Armour Of God’ (1987), ‘City Hunter’ (1993), ‘Thunderbolt’ (1995), and ‘Mr. Nice Guy’ (1997). Beyond his prolific work in film, Chua Lam became a prominent media personality, co-hosting the classic adult talk show ‘Celebrity Talk Show’ from 1989 to 1990 on Asia Television, alongside industry legends Jin Yong and Ni Kuang. His influence also expanded significantly into the culinary world, where he hosted several popular food programs, including ‘Market Trotter’ (2007), ‘Chua’s Choice’ (2008), and ‘Be My Guest’ (2009).

In recent years, Chua Lam has continued to engage and inspire audiences through unique experiential offerings. Between 2013 and 2024, he organized six highly popular culinary and travel tours in collaboration with Apple Vacations Malaysia, providing immersive cultural experiences for participants. In 2023, he further showcased his artistic versatility and deep cultural roots through a notable calligraphy exhibition, a collaboration with Sin Chew Daily, reinforcing his lasting legacy as a multi-talented industry figure.
