Colton Scott Brown-Underwood was born on January 26, 1992, in Indianapolis, Indiana. He attended Washington Community High School before playing college football as a defensive end at Illinois State University, following in his father’s footsteps. After college, Underwood signed as an undrafted free agent with the San Diego Chargers in 2014. He also spent time on the practice squads for the Philadelphia Eagles and the Oakland Raiders, primarily in 2014, 2015, and 2016.
Underwood gained national prominence through his appearances on various reality television series. In 2018, he was a contestant on the 14th season of “The Bachelorette,” and later that year, he participated in season 5 of “Bachelor in Paradise.” His media career further escalated when he was announced as the lead for the 23rd season of “The Bachelor,” which aired in 2019. In April 2021, Underwood publicly came out as gay, a significant turning point in his personal and public life, making him the first lead in the Bachelor franchise to do so. This led to a six-episode Netflix unscripted series, “Coming Out Colton,” which premiered in December 2021, where he explored his journey and met with other openly gay public figures. In 2024, he competed as “Lovebird” on season eleven of “The Masked Singer.”
Beyond entertainment, Underwood established the Colton Underwood Legacy Foundation in January 2016 to support cystic fibrosis research and provide medical equipment. His philanthropy is dedicated to assisting children with cystic fibrosis, a cause close to his heart due to his cousin’s diagnosis. In January 2018, the foundation launched the Legacy Project, aiming to deliver AffloVests to children in all 50 U.S. states. He married Jordan C. Brown on May 13, 2023, and they welcomed their son, Bishop Colton Brown-Underwood, in September 2024.
