Few careers bridge sport and screen as convincingly as Cristo Fernandez’s. Born Cristóbal Fernández González on 27 January 1991 in Guadalajara, Jalisco, he discovered football early, joining the youth teams of Estudiantes Tecos at 15. He went on to play in Mexico’s Tercera División for Valle del Grullo and had a stint with Guayama in Puerto Rico before a knee injury ended his professional playing days in 2014. With his parents’ encouragement, he began pursuing acting as a second career.
Fernández fell in love with acting while in college and committed to it after moving to London, where a run of indie film work led to his defining role: Dani Rojas on Apple TV+’s Ted Lasso, which he played across all three seasons from 2020 to 2023. His football background gave the character its authenticity and made him a fan favourite on one of television’s most-watched comedies. He has since appeared in Spider-Man: No Way Home (2021), Transformers: Rise of the Beasts (2023), Venom: The Last Dance (2024), and Sonic the Hedgehog 3 (2024).
An entrepreneur as well, Fernández co-founded the production company Espectro MX Films. Since 2024 he has appeared alongside Patrick Mahomes in State Farm’s “Bundle is Life” campaign and fronted English and Spanish Old Spice Swagger commercials. Fluent in German, he plays embassy staff member Fernando in the Swiss sitcom Unsere kleine Botschaft, performing undubbed.
