Cynthia Ann Stephanie Lauper, born on June 22, 1953, in Brooklyn, New York City, developed an interest in music at an early age. She began writing songs and playing the acoustic guitar at 12. After an early career attempting to establish herself in music, including a period with the band Blue Angel from 1978 to 1982, Lauper achieved significant mainstream success with her debut solo album, “She’s So Unusual,” released in 1983. This album made her the first female artist to have four top-five hits from a single debut album on the Billboard Hot 100, featuring iconic tracks like “Girls Just Want to Have Fun” and “Time After Time.” In 1985, she received the Grammy Award for Best New Artist. Her early career also involved notable appearances with the World Wrestling Federation, contributing to the “Rock ‘n’ Wrestling Connection.
Lauper continued to release successful albums, including “True Colors” in 1986, which featured the hit title track. In addition to her musical endeavors, Lauper ventured into acting, appearing in films such as “Vibes” (1988) and later earning an Emmy Award in 1995 for her guest role in the television sitcom “Mad About You.” A significant career milestone occurred in 2013 when she composed the music and lyrics for the Broadway musical “Kinky Boots.” This achievement made her the first woman to win a Tony Award for Best Original Score by herself, and the musical went on to win five other Tony Awards, including Best Musical. She later received a Grammy Award for Best Musical Theater Album for the cast recording of “Kinky Boots.”
Throughout her career, Lauper has been a prominent activist, particularly for LGBTQ+ rights. She co-founded the True Colors Fund in 2008 to address youth homelessness, especially within the LGBTQ+ community. Her humanitarian work has been recognized alongside her musical and acting accomplishments. In 2015, she was inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame, and in 2025, she is slated for induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. Her album “She’s So Unusual” was listed among Rolling Stone’s 500 Greatest Albums of All Time, solidifying her legacy as an influential figure in popular music and a sustained advocate for social causes.
