About

Dana Carvey was born on June 2, 1955, in Missoula, Montana, and raised in San Carlos, California. His early talent for comedy emerged as a child with mimicry, and he developed musical skills in drumming and guitar. While studying Communication Arts at San Francisco State University, Carvey began performing stand-up comedy, where he quickly gained recognition for his impressions. He later evolved his style to include self-created characters, leading to his move to Los Angeles in 1981, where he secured a development deal with NBC. His early television work included a role as Mickey Rooney’s grandson in the sitcom “One of the Boys” (1982) and a minor appearance in “Halloween II” (1981). These foundational experiences paved the way for his later success in comedy, building a career centered on character performance and impersonation.

Carvey’s career reached a turning point in 1986 when he joined the cast of “Saturday Night Live.” His six-season tenure on the show was pivotal in reversing its declining popularity, where he created iconic characters such as the Church Lady, Garth Algar, and the Grumpy Old Man. His ability to deliver sharp, quicksilver characterizations and uncanny impressions of public figures like George H. W. Bush and Ross Perot earned him widespread acclaim. This period culminated in an Emmy Award win in 1993 for “Outstanding Individual Performance in a Variety or Music Program.” Beyond SNL, Carvey transitioned into film, notably co-starring with Mike Myers in “Wayne’s World” (1992) and “Wayne’s World 2” (1993), which became commercial successes. He also explored other film projects like “Opportunity Knocks” (1990) and “Clean Slate” (1994).

Following his departure from SNL in 1993, Carvey continued to pursue various projects in comedy and film. He hosted “The Dana Carvey Show” (1996), a sketch comedy series that, despite its short run, featured emerging talents such as Steve Carell and Stephen Colbert. In 2002, he starred in “The Master of Disguise,” where he showcased his versatility by portraying multiple characters. Carvey has also lent his voice to animated films, including “Hotel Transylvania 2” (2015), “The Secret Life of Pets” (2016), and “The Secret Life of Pets 2” (2019). His work also extends to podcasts, where he co-hosts “Fly on the Wall” with David Spade and “Superfly,” demonstrating his ongoing presence in the entertainment industry.
