Russian tennis player Daniil Medvedev is a seven-time ATP singles winner, a two-time Masters 1000 title winner, and a US Open finalist. Known as a baseline player with a high level of speed, agility and mental fitness, he achieved a career-high ATP ranking of world No. 4 in 2019. He is widely recognised as one of tennis’s most promising young talents.
Medvedev reached his first ATP singles final in 2017, when he was runner-up at the Chennai Open, and he later advanced to the latter stages of the Open Sud de France and the Open 13. He would win his first title on the tour the following season, when he claimed victory at the Sydney International, and would score further wins that year at the Rakuten Japan Open Tennis Championships and the Winston-Salem Open.
Medvedev made his senior Grand Slam debut at the Australian Open in 2017, and enjoyed increasing success at Grand Slam tournaments over the following two years. He reached the fourth round of the Australian Open in 2019, and at the end of that season sensationally made it to the final of the US Open in New York. Here he put up an impressive fight against former champion and sometime world No. 1 Rafael Nadal, losing only in the fifth set after almost five hours of play. Though Medvedev had not earned the Grand Slam title, he had become a household name and established himself as a likely star of future tournaments.
