About

Daniel Richard McBride was born on December 29, 1976, in Statesboro, Georgia. He was raised in Spotsylvania County, Virginia, and attended the University of North Carolina School of the Arts in Winston-Salem, North Carolina. His early career saw him work as a second unit director for David Gordon Green’s film “George Washington” in 2000, and he made his acting debut in Green’s second film, “All the Real Girls” (2003).

McBride gained recognition as Fred Simmons in the 2006 low-budget comedy film “The Foot Fist Way,” which he co-wrote with Jody Hill and Ben Best. This role led to mainstream opportunities, with starring parts in comedy films including “Hot Rod” (2007), “Pineapple Express” (2008), and “Tropic Thunder” (2008). A significant turning point in his career was his lead role as Kenny Powers in the HBO television series “Eastbound & Down” (2009–2013), a show he co-created. The series was well-received, leading to its renewal for multiple seasons and solidifying his status as a comedic talent capable of both acting and writing.

His career continued to evolve with co-creation and starring roles in other HBO series like “Vice Principals” (2016–2017) and “The Righteous Gemstones” (2019–2025). McBride has also demonstrated versatility with voice acting roles in animated films such as “Despicable Me” (2010), “Kung Fu Panda 2” (2011), “The Angry Birds Movie” (2016), and “The Mitchells vs. the Machines” (2021). Beyond comedy, he has taken on roles against his typical comedic type, including in the science fiction horror film “Alien: Covenant” (2017) and played a crucial role as a writer and executive producer for Blumhouse Productions’ successful “Halloween” film trilogy (2018–2022). His work as an executive producer on the true crime documentary series “Telemarketers” (2023) earned him a Primetime Emmy Award nomination, showcasing his diverse contributions to film and television.
