Dario Amodei

Dario Amodei was born in San Francisco, California, in 1983. He began his higher education at Caltech and later transferred to Stanford University, where he completed his undergraduate degree in physics. Amodei then pursued and earned a doctorate degree in biophysics from Princeton University as a Hertz Fellow, specializing in the electrophysiology of neural circuits. Following his doctoral studies, he undertook postdoctoral research at the Stanford University School of Medicine.

Amodei’s professional career in artificial intelligence began with roles at notable technology companies. He worked at Baidu from November 2014 to October 2015, and subsequently at Google as a Senior Research Scientist. In 2016, Amodei joined OpenAI, where he became the Vice President of Research. During his tenure at OpenAI, he led the development of large language models such as GPT-2 and GPT-3 and is recognized as a co-inventor of reinforcement learning from human feedback.

In 2021, Dario Amodei co-founded Anthropic with his sister Daniela Amodei and other former colleagues from OpenAI. Anthropic was established as a public benefit corporation with a mission to build AI systems that are steerable, interpretable, and safe. As CEO of Anthropic, Amodei has guided the company in developing the Claude large language model series. He has also been recognized for his contributions to the field, including being named one of TIME’s 100 most influential people in 2025. In July 2025, Anthropic secured a significant $200M defense contract from the United States Department of Defense, alongside other AI companies.
