Larry Sanders was born on November 21, 1988, in Fort Pierce, Florida. His journey in basketball began in high school at Port St. Lucie, where he experienced significant growth spurts and began to showcase his talent. After high school, Sanders attended Virginia Commonwealth University (VCU), where he played for the VCU Rams. During his time at VCU, he excelled defensively, earning back-to-back CAA Defensive Player of the Year awards in 2009 and 2010. In his junior season, he averaged 14.4 points, 9.1 rebounds, and 2.6 blocks, demonstrating his impact on the court before deciding to enter the NBA draft early in April 2010.
Sanders was drafted 15th overall by the Milwaukee Bucks in the 2010 NBA Draft. He signed a multi-year rookie contract and made his NBA debut on October 27, 2010. A significant season for Sanders was 2012-13, where he recorded a triple-double with 10 points, 12 rebounds, and 10 blocks, and finished second in the league for blocks per game. His performance that year led to him signing a four-year, $44 million contract extension with the Bucks in August 2013, indicating the team’s belief in his potential. However, his career faced challenges, including injuries, suspensions for violating the NBA’s drug policy, and periods away from the team for personal reasons, notably for mental health issues. In February 2015, the Bucks bought out his contract.
After a period away from professional basketball, Sanders announced his return to the sport in January 2017.
