About

Born on July 10, 1960, in Cleveland, OH, Darryl Talley, also known by nicknames such as “Big Chief,” “Spiderman,” “The Duke of Awesome,” and “The Hammer,” built a notable career in Football. He began his collegiate journey at West Virginia University, where he distinguished himself as a versatile player, excelling as both a fullback and a linebacker. Despite a high school ankle injury that sidelined him for seven games, Talley became a starter from 1979 to 1982, leading the Mountaineers to significant bowl appearances, including the Peach Bowl in 1981 and the Gator Bowl in 1982. A highlight of his college career included an interception against Dan Marino and a blocked punt returned for a touchdown. As a senior in 1982, Talley was recognized as a consensus All-American, and by 2011, he was inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame. He set a school record with 484 career tackles, a milestone that stood for 21 years, alongside 28 tackles for loss and 19 sacks, solidifying his legacy as one of West Virginia’s most formidable defensive players.

Talley transitioned to professional football after being selected by the Buffalo Bills in the second round (39th overall) of the 1983 NFL Draft. He dedicated 12 seasons to the Bills, where he became the team’s all-time leading tackler with 1,137 tackles. Throughout his NFL career, which spanned 14 seasons, Talley never missed a game with the Bills. He recorded 38.5 sacks, 12 interceptions resulting in 189 return yards and 3 touchdowns, and 14 fumble recoveries with 76 return yards. He was known for averaging 120 tackles, 3.5 sacks, and 6.2 takeaways per season. His contributions to the Buffalo Bills included playing in four Super Bowls and earning two Pro Bowl selections in 1990 and 1991. The Sporting News recognized him as First-Team All-Pro in both 1990 and 1993, highlighting his consistent performance.

Following his impactful years with the Bills, Talley played for the Atlanta Falcons in 1995 and concluded his career with the Minnesota Vikings in 1996. In 2003, his enduring legacy with the Buffalo Bills was honored with his induction onto the Wall of Fame at Ralph Wilson Stadium. In retirement, Talley has remained connected to the community, establishing a charitable foundation in Rochester, N.Y., and working with Anchor House Ministries in Orlando, Florida. His career exemplifies a commitment to excellence and community engagement, even as he has openly discussed his personal struggles with health issues stemming from his playing days.
