Dave Chappelle rose to international prominence with his seminal sketch comedy series Chappelle’s Show, which debuted on Comedy Central in 2003. Co-created and starring Chappelle, the critically acclaimed series, running for three seasons, became a cultural phenomenon known for its insightful social commentary and parodies of American culture. Despite an early departure, Viacom offered Chappelle a substantial $55 million contract for future seasons. Earlier, Chappelle debuted in Robin Hood: Men in Tights (1993), appeared in The Nutty Professor (1996), and co-wrote and starred in the cult classic Half Baked (1998).
His initial Netflix specials, The Age of Spin and Deep in the Heart of Texas, were released in 2017, earning him a Grammy Award for Best Comedy Album in 2018. Chappelle continued his prolific output with Netflix, releasing Equanimity and The Bird Revelation in 2017, earning an Emmy for Outstanding Variety Special (Pre-Recorded) in 2018 and a Grammy for Best Comedy Album in 2019. His 2019 special, Dave Chappelle: Sticks & Stones, garnered a Grammy for Best Comedy Album in 2020. Beyond stand-up, Chappelle appeared as ‘Noodles’ in the Oscar-winning film A Star Is Born (2018) and hosted Saturday Night Live multiple times, earning a Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Guest Actor in a Comedy Series in 2017 for his 2016 appearance.
Chappelle is slated to host Saturday Night Live for a fourth time in 2025. Through his production company, Pilot Boy Productions, founded in 1992, Chappelle remains active in film and television production, and has made investments in local businesses, including a planned comedy club.
