David Axelrod, a preeminent American political consultant and analyst, began his distinguished career as the youngest political writer for the Chicago Tribune in 1981, advancing to City Hall Bureau Chief and a political columnist before departing in 1984. He then joined Paul Simons U.S. Senate campaign as communications director, quickly being promoted to co-campaign manager in 1984. Axelrod became widely known as the chief strategist for Barack Obamas historic 2008 presidential campaign and continued in this pivotal role for the 2012 re-election campaign. Following Obama’s initial election, Axelrod was appointed Senior Advisor to the President, serving in the White House from 2009 to 2011. In 2013, Axelrod established the University of Chicago Institute of Politics, where he served as director until 2023, shaping the next generation of political leaders. Concurrently, he joined NBC News and MSNBC as a senior political analyst in 2013, providing expert commentary on national politics.
In 2022, he announced his intention to step down as Director of the University of Chicago Institute of Politics, concluding a decade of leadership at the institution.
