Laura Jane Davies was born on October 5, 1963, in Coventry, Warwickshire, England. Her amateur career included international representation for Great Britain, notably winning the 1983 English Intermediate Championship and the 1984 Welsh Ladies Open Stroke Play Championship. She was also a member of the Great Britain and Ireland Curtis Cup Team in 1984. Davies turned professional in 1985.
Davies began her professional journey on the WPGET (now Ladies European Tour) in 1985, securing both Rookie of the Year and Order of Merit titles. The following year, she captured four titles, including the Women’s British Open. In 1987, Davies made her mark in the United States, winning the U.S. Women’s Open, which led the LPGA to grant her automatic membership. This victory made her the second non-American to win the U.S. Women’s Open. From 1988, Davies competed on both the LPGA and Ladies European Tours, achieving the distinction of being the first woman to win on three major Tours (US, Europe, and Japan) in the same year.
A decorated career includes 86 professional wins worldwide, with 20 on the LPGA Tour and 45 on the Ladies European Tour. She has captured four major championships: the 1987 U.S. Women’s Open, the 1994 and 1996 McDonald’s LPGA Championships, and the 1996 du Maurier Classic. Davies is a life member of the Ladies European Tour and was inducted into the World Golf Hall of Fame in 2015. She also played a significant role in the Solheim Cup, participating in 12 events and serving as a vice-captain for four European teams.
