David Castañeda was born on October 24, 1989, in Los Angeles, California, and spent his early years growing up in Sinaloa, Mexico. At the age of 14, he relocated back to the United States, attending William Workman High School in California. His academic journey initially led him to pursue civil engineering, with the goal of joining his family’s business. However, his interests shifted towards filmmaking. In 2007, Castañeda enrolled at California State University, Fullerton, where he majored in film production and international business. During his studies, he developed an interest in acting, beginning to audition for roles while taking classes part-time. He ultimately completed his degree in 2015, by which point his acting career was already underway.
Castañeda’s professional acting career began with minor roles in various productions, including the short film ‘Maddoggin” which received an audience award at the NBC Universal Short Cut Film Festival. A significant recurring role came in 2013 when he joined the ABC Family series ‘Switched at Birth’ as Jorge. His film work expanded with roles in productions such as ‘Sicario: Day of the Soldado’ (2018), where he played Hector. He also appeared in the independent film ‘El Chicano’ (2018) and ‘We Die Young’ (2019), starring Jean-Claude Van Damme.
The turning point in Castañeda’s career arrived in 2017 when he was cast as Diego Hargreeves, also known as Number 2, in ‘The Umbrella Academy.’ This Netflix series, which premiered in February 2019, brought him widespread recognition and established him as a prominent figure in the streaming landscape. He reprised this role for four seasons, concluding in August 2024. Following this, he is scheduled to appear in ‘Ballerina,’ a ‘John Wick’ spin-off film, and the indie film ‘Chalino,’ showcasing his continued engagement in diverse and high-profile projects.
