David Croft

David Michael Croft, born on June 19, 1970, in Stevenage, Hertfordshire, England, embarked on his broadcasting career in hospital radio at Radio Fairfield. He subsequently spent three years at BBC Three Counties Radio, initially working as a sports reporter before becoming the sports editor. In December 1998, Croft moved to BBC Radio 5 Live, where his responsibilities included covering major sporting events such as the 2002 FIFA World Cup and the 2004 Athens Summer Olympics. He also presented ‘Saturday Sport on 5′ during the summers of 2004 and 2005, showcasing his versatility in sports broadcasting.

Croft became a prominent voice in Formula One when he took on the role of BBC Radio 5 Live’s Formula One commentator and presenter in 2006. He worked alongside figures such as Anthony Davidson, Ted Kravitz, and Natalie Pinkham, providing commentary for Grand Prix races, qualifying sessions, and practice sessions. Beyond Formula One, Croft also covered the BDO World Darts Championship and Winmau World Masters for BBC Television from 2004 to 2012, having first covered the World Darts Championship for BBC Radio 5 Live in 2002.

A significant career turning point occurred in December 2011 when Sky Sports announced Croft as their lead commentator for Formula One coverage, starting with the 2012 season. He continued his collaboration with notable personalities including Martin Brundle, solidifying his position as a recognizable voice in Formula One. In 2019, Croft reached a milestone, celebrating his 250th Grand Prix as a Formula One commentator at the Azerbaijan Grand Prix. His commentary work extends to popular culture, with his voice featured in Codemasters’ F1 video game series and as the character Lofty Crofty in the European release of the film ‘Planes’.
