Born David John McDonald on April 18, 1971, in Bathgate, West Lothian, Scotland, David Tennant developed a passion for acting at a young age, inspired by “Doctor Who.” He attended Paisley Grammar School and, at 16, was accepted into the Royal Scottish Academy of Music and Drama (now the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland), becoming its youngest student. Upon graduating, he adopted the stage name David Tennant due to another actor with the same name. His early theatre work included performances with the agitprop 7:84 Theatre Company and various plays at the Dundee Repertory Theatre, along with television appearances such as a transgender barmaid in “Rab C Nesbitt.”
Tennant’s career progressed with a lead role in the Scottish drama “Takin’ Over the Asylum” (1994), after which he moved to London. He became a member of the Royal Shakespeare Company, where he took on diverse roles, ranging from the jester Touchstone in “As You Like It” (1996) to Romeo in “Romeo and Juliet.” His contributions to British television included “Bright Young Things” (2003), “Blackpool” (2004), and “Casanova” (2005). A significant career milestone came in 2005 when he portrayed Barty Crouch Jr. in “Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire,” further establishing his presence on screen.
The year 2005 marked a turning point when Tennant fulfilled his childhood dream by being cast as the Tenth Doctor in “Doctor Who.” This role catapulted him to international fame, making him a household name. After leaving the series in 2010, his career continued to flourish with lead roles in various productions, including the acclaimed crime drama “Broadchurch” (2013–2017) and “Jessica Jones” (2015–2019) as the villain Kilgrave. His extensive work also includes vocal performances in animated series and films, and he currently actively serves as an executive producer on several projects, showcasing his multifaceted contributions to the entertainment industry.
