DeMar Darnell DeRozan was born on August 7, 1989, in Compton, California. He attended Compton High School, where he was ranked as a top college recruit and played varsity basketball for all four years. During his high school career, he consistently demonstrated strong performance, averaging 26.1 points and 8.4 rebounds as a freshman and leading his team to consecutive Moore League championships as a senior with averages of 29.2 points and 7.9 rebounds. His high school achievements included being named the Moore League Most Valuable Player, California All-State team, a McDonald’s All-American, and winning the 2008 McDonald’s All-American Slam Dunk Competition.
After a single season of college basketball at USC, where he was named Pac-10 Tournament MVP and earned First Team Pac-10 All-Freshman honors, DeRozan declared for the 2009 NBA draft. He was selected ninth overall by the Toronto Raptors, beginning a nine-season tenure during which he became the franchise’s all-time leading scorer. His time with the Raptors included four NBA All-Star selections and two All-NBA team selections, establishing him as a key player in the league. Notable individual performances include a then-career-high 40 points against the Dallas Mavericks in 2014 and a franchise-record 52 points against the Milwaukee Bucks in 2018. During his career, DeRozan has been a consistent high-volume scorer, known for his midrange game. He has won an Olympic Gold Medal with the United States national team in 2016 and a FIBA Basketball World Cup gold medal in 2014.
Following his impactful period with the Raptors, DeRozan was traded to the San Antonio Spurs in 2018 and later to the Chicago Bulls in 2021. With the Bulls, he continued to showcase his scoring ability, setting an NBA record in 2022 for scoring 35 or more points with 50 percent or better shooting in seven consecutive games. In March 2025, while playing for the Sacramento Kings after a trade in 2024, he became the 27th player in NBA history to achieve 25,000 career points. DeRozan has publicly discussed his experiences with depression, becoming an advocate for mental health awareness. His book, “Above the Noise: My Story of Chasing Calm,” reflects on his personal journey.
