Dennis Miller, born on November 3, 1953, in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, began his career in comedy by performing at open-mic nights in his hometown after attending Point Park University and earning a journalism degree in 1976. Despite initial stage fright, he later moved to New York City to further his stand-up career. During this period, he won an award from Playboy Magazine for submitting the joke of the year in 1979 and gained exposure through competitions. After returning to Pittsburgh, Miller worked at local television station KDKA-TV, hosting humorous segments for ‘Evening Magazine’ and a teen newsmagazine called ‘Punchline,’ which helped him develop his on-camera presence.
Miller’s career progressed significantly when he was discovered by Lorne Michaels in 1985 and joined the cast of NBC’s “Saturday Night Live.” He became the anchor for the iconic “Weekend Update” segment from 1985 to 1991, known for his sardonic delivery and pop culture references. During his tenure at SNL, he released a stand-up comedy album, “The Off-White Album” (1988), and an HBO special, “Dennis Miller: Black and White” (1990). His work on “Saturday Night Live” established his distinct comedic voice and brought him national recognition.
Following his departure from “Saturday Night Live,” Miller hosted several eponymous talk shows. “The Dennis Miller Show” (1992) was a syndicated late-night talk show, and “Dennis Miller Live” (1994-2002) was a critically acclaimed HBO show for which he won five Emmy Awards alongside his writing staff. From 2007 to 2015, Miller hosted “The Dennis Miller Show,” a nationally syndicated talk radio program. He also appeared in films such as “The Net” (1995), “Joe Dirt” (2001), and “Thank You for Smoking” (2005), often in dramatic roles. His diverse career also included a role as a color commentator for ABC’s “Monday Night Football” (2000-2002).
