Valerie Coleman Morris, an Emmy Award-winning journalist, has left an indelible mark on the world of media and financial advocacy. With a journalistic career spanning over 35 years, she began her journey in San Francisco, contributing to KRON-TV and KGO-TV. Her roles evolved from researcher to general assignment reporter, ultimately ascending to the esteemed position of anchor. Morris further solidified her presence as the morning drive anchor for KCBS radio and TV in Los Angeles, setting the stage for her impactful tenure at CNN.
During her time at CNN, Morris served as a weekend anchor and later as the Business Anchor on both domestic and international fronts. Her journalistic excellence garnered numerous accolades, including three Emmy Awards and a Peabody Award for her exceptional coverage in the aftermath of the 1989 California earthquake.
Despite receiving a contract extension from CNN, Morris redirected her energy to address another passion — advocating for financial literacy, particularly among marginalized groups. Her commitment to empowering women, young adults, and people of color led her to conduct talks, lectures, and workshops on financial issues. Notably, she has contributed to the University of California Berkeley’s Osher Lifelong Learning Institute, presenting a three-part lecture series.
In her ongoing efforts to promote financial awareness, Morris writes and narrates “With the Family in Mind,” a column focusing on family issues and their financial implications. Airing three times a week on CBS Network Radio, her work continues to resonate, making her a dedicated advocate for financial literacy and a beacon of inspiration in the world of journalism.
