Born Antoine DeRay Davis on February 26, 1982, in Chicago, Illinois, DeRay Davis began his career in local comedy clubs. His early efforts led to a significant breakthrough at the Laffapalooza Festival in Atlanta, GA. This was followed by winning the Comedy Central Laugh Riots Competition. He further solidified his comedic presence with appearances at the Montreal Just for Laughs Festival and the Budweiser Def Comedy Jam Competition. These early achievements laid the foundation for his transition into acting and broader entertainment roles.
Davis quickly expanded his presence from stand-up comedy to feature films and television. He secured his first single-card credit as “Spooner” in John Carpenter’s 2005 remake of “The Fog.” Over the next decade, he accumulated over 30 film roles and 50 television appearances, demonstrating consistent work and versatility. Notable film credits include “License to Wed” (2007) with John Krasinski, “Semi-Pro” (2008) alongside Will Ferrell, “Imagine That” (2009) with Eddie Murphy, “Life As We Know It” (2010), “21 Jump Street” (2012) featuring Channing Tatum and Johnny Depp, and “G.I. In addition to acting, Davis has also contributed as a writer and producer. He wrote and performed several comedic skits on Kanye West’s albums “The College Dropout” and “Late Registration,” impersonating Bernie Mac in opening tracks and appearing as the leader of “Broke Phi Broke.” He also contributed voice-over roles for animated series like “The Boondocks” and “Black Dynamite.” His comedic specials, “DeRay Davis: Power Play” (2010) and “DeRay Davis: How to Act Black” (2017), broadcast on Showtime and Netflix respectively, further showcased his stand-up talent. The Netflix special was particularly successful, causing temporary outages on the platform due to high viewership.
