Derrick Lee Morgan, born on January 6, 1989, in Lancaster, Pennsylvania, developed his athletic skills at Coatesville Area High School. He excelled in football, earning league Defensive Player of the Year and first-team All-State honors as a senior, while also performing as a running back. His collegiate career at Georgia Institute of Technology, spanning from 2007 to 2009, showcased his talent as a defensive end for the Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets. Following a strong sophomore season, Morgan’s junior year in 2009 was particularly standout; he was named ACC Defensive Player of the Year and received first-team All-American accolades, concluding with 55 tackles and 12.5 sacks.
Morgan’s professional football journey began in the 2010 NFL Draft when the Tennessee Titans selected him as the 16th overall pick. He played for the Titans for nine seasons, initially as a 4-3 defensive end before transitioning to outside linebacker in a 3-4 defense in 2014. Key career milestones include leading the Titans in sacks with 6.5 in 2012 and 6.5 in 2014, and setting a career-high of 9.0 sacks in 2016. He finished his NFL career with 44.5 sacks, placing him sixth all-time in Titans history at the time of his retirement on July 15, 2019. Throughout his playing days, Morgan also pursued higher education, earning a degree in business management from Georgia Tech and an Executive MBA from the University of Miami.
Beyond his athletic contributions, Morgan became a vocal advocate for medical cannabis research in the NFL, serving on the NFL Player’s Association committee on pain management and as a board member for Athletes for Care. He also ventured into business, co-founding Huddle Ventures, which aims to support athletes in monetizing their influence, and establishing the KNGDM Impact Fund, an Opportunity Zone fund focused on investing in underserved communities. His diverse endeavors highlight a career marked by professional achievement on the field and significant engagement in social and entrepreneurial initiatives off the field.
