When Des’ree Barnes was just six years old, she became the world champion in bicycle racing. Thirteen years later, she’s added four more BMX world titles under her belt, as well as nine national championship titles.
Hailing from Brisbane, this Australian racer first picked up her brother’s bike when she was just four years old. Her father, Luke, recognized her early talent and began coaching her for races. And when the 2009 UCI BMX World Championship came to her hometown, she won the challenge class, becoming a world champion at age six. While she was on the course, a commentator coined her “Desi-Racer.” Thirteen years later, the BMX community still refers to her by that nickname.
In addition to her five world titles and nine national titles, Barnes has nabbed second and third place finishes on the world stage, all before she was eighteen, beating out hundreds of competitors. Her family’s traveled with her to race all across the globe, ranging from her stomping grounds of Australia, to South Africa, Denmark, the UK, New Zealand, the Netherlands, Belgium, Colombia, and more recently, the US. Currently, she represents Beenleigh BMX Club. With all of this success, Barnes has several sponsors, including Puma, marketing their products to her tens of thousands of social media followers.
Outside of BMX, Barnes is also an award-winning weightlifter with Cougars Weightlifting Club. She represented Australia at the 2017 Oceania Championship, placing second overall at just fourteen years old. With a few national titles to her name, she’s currently second in the country for lifting 53kg, and holds the state record for 500mm TT.
