Dirk Uittenbogaard

Lucas Theodoor Dirk Uittenbogaard, born on May 8, 1990, in Amsterdam, Netherlands, is a distinguished Dutch rower. Standing at 1.98m and weighing 90kg, Uittenbogaard has made significant contributions to Dutch rowing. His international representative debut occurred in 2006 at the Junior World Rowing Championships in Beijing, where he competed in a double scull. He continued to compete at the Junior levels, and from 2009 to 2012, he represented the Netherlands at the World Rowing U23 Championships in several boat classes, including the quad, single scull, and double scull.

Uittenbogaard moved into senior representative crews in 2013, participating in the men’s quad at the World Rowing Championships in South Korea. He earned a bronze medal in the men’s eight at the 2015 World Rowing Championships and subsequently at the 2016 Summer Olympics in Rio de Janeiro. His career trajectory saw a pivotal shift in 2018 when he joined the Netherlands’ quad-scull team, which led to significant achievements. In 2019, with a refined crew, he secured a gold medal at the European Championships and another gold at the World Rowing Championships in Ottensheim, becoming a world champion in the men’s quad scull.

The pinnacle of Uittenbogaard’s career arrived at the 2020 Tokyo Olympic Games. Despite an initial setback with a ‘crab’ at the start of the Men’s Quadruple Sculls Final A, the Dutch team, including Abe Wiersma, Tone Wieten, and Koen Metsemakers, demonstrated resilience and achieved a gold medal. They also set a new world’s best time for the event. This victory marked the first Olympic gold for the Netherlands in the Tokyo Games and the first gold medal for men’s rowing in 25 years for the country. Uittenbogaard is also a student in the Delft-Leiden Master’s in Industrial Ecology.
