Paul Douglas Collins was born on July 28, 1951, in Christopher, Illinois. He was drafted first overall by the Philadelphia 76ers in the 1973 NBA draft after playing for Illinois State University. During his playing career with the 76ers from 1973 to 1981, he was a four-time NBA All-Star. In the 1976-77 season, he helped lead the 76ers to the NBA Finals. His playing career concluded after eight seasons due to a series of injuries to his feet and left knee, having scored 7,427 points, averaging 17.9 points per game.
Following his retirement as a player, Collins transitioned into coaching. He began as an assistant coach at Penn and Arizona State before becoming head coach of the Chicago Bulls in May 1986. Under his leadership, the Bulls improved significantly, reaching their first Eastern Conference finals appearance in 15 years in his third season. He later coached the Detroit Pistons from 1995 to 1998, improving their record and earning the role of Eastern Conference All-Star team coach in his second season. Collins also had coaching stints with the Washington Wizards (2001-2003) and returned to the Philadelphia 76ers as head coach from 2010 to 2013, where he led the team to a significant improvement and a playoff series victory in 2012.
Beyond coaching, Collins has also had a notable career as a television analyst for various networks, including CBS, NBC, TNT, TBS, and ABC/ESPN, covering NBA regular season games, All-Star Weekends, and NBA Finals, as well as Olympic basketball. In 2017, he joined the Chicago Bulls as a senior advisor of basketball operations. His contributions to basketball were recognized with his induction into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame in 2024 as a Contributor.
