Dwight Freeney

Dwight Jason Freeney was born on February 18, 1980, in Hartford, Connecticut. He attended Bloomfield High School, where he excelled as a four-sport letterman in baseball, basketball, football, and soccer. Freeney set high school records for sacks and had his No. 44 football jersey retired. His early athletic career laid the foundation for his future success in professional football.

Freeney played college football for the Syracuse Orange from 1998 to 2001, where he was a two-year starter. He recorded 17.5 sacks in his senior season, leading the nation, and 34 career sacks, second in school history. Freeney was recognized as a unanimous first-team All-American in 2001 and was inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame in 2023. His impressive college performance, including a notable game against Michael Vick where he registered 4.5 sacks, showcased his talent as a premier pass rusher.

Selected by the Indianapolis Colts as the 11th overall pick in the 2002 NFL Draft, Freeney immediately impacted the league. He set an NFL rookie record with nine forced fumbles and contributed significantly to the Colts’ defensive improvement. Throughout his 16-season NFL career, Freeney earned three first-team All-Pro honors, seven Pro Bowl selections, and a Super Bowl XLI championship with the Colts. He totaled 125.5 sacks and 47 forced fumbles, tying for fourth on the NFL’s all-time list. Freeney retired in 2018 as a Colt and was inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 2024. He currently serves as the Director of Player Development for Syracuse University, returning to his alma mater.
