In September 2006, Rageh Omaar moved to a new post at Al Jazeera English, where he presented the nightly weekday documentary series Witness until January 2010. About

Rageh Omaar was born on July 19, 1967, in Mogadishu, Somali Republic. He moved to the United Kingdom at the age of two and received his education at the Dragon School and Cheltenham College, later studying Modern History at New College, Oxford. Omaar began his journalism career as a trainee for The Voice newspaper. In 1991, he freelanced as a foreign correspondent in Ethiopia, primarily for the BBC World Service. The following year, he joined the BBC in London as a producer and broadcast journalist, eventually becoming the BBC’s Africa correspondent. His early career included significant reporting on conflicts in Somalia and Iraq.

Omaar gained widespread recognition for his coverage of the Iraq invasion for BBC News, with many of his reports syndicated across the United States. He authored the book “Revolution Day” about his experiences as the BBC’s Iraq correspondent, focusing on the impact of the Saddam Hussein regime, UN sanctions, and the war on Iraqi civilians. In September 2006, he transitioned to Al Jazeera English, where he presented the nightly documentary series “Witness” and hosted “The Rageh Omaar Report,” a monthly investigative documentary. He served as a Middle Eastern correspondent for the London division of Al Jazeera English, further solidifying his international profile. Omaar then joined ITV News in January 2013 as a special correspondent, quickly advancing to International Affairs Editor a year later. Since October 2015, he has also served as a deputy newscaster for “ITV News at Ten,” and occasionally presents “ITV Lunchtime News” and “ITV Evening News” since September 2017.

Throughout his career, Omaar has received numerous awards, including an Ethnic Multicultural Media Academy award for best TV journalist in 2003 and the Arab Media Watch Award for excellence in journalism in 2008. He was also nominated for the Services to Media award at the British Muslim Awards in 2014 and 2015. His other works include television documentaries such as “An Islamic History of Europe” (2005) and “The Life of Muhammad” (2011), and the book “Only Half of Me: Being a Muslim in Britain” (2006). Omaar continues to be an influential figure in journalism, covering major news stories globally and producing in-depth reports.
