Born Ederson Santana de Moraes on August 17, 1993, in Osasco, São Paulo, Brazil, Ederson began his football journey in the youth ranks of São Paulo FC, spending two years there. His professional career commenced in 2011 with second-tier Portuguese club Ribeirão, where he played 30 games in one season. This early performance led him to Primeira Liga side Rio Ave, where he spent three seasons and accumulated 63 appearances across all competitions. His consistent form at Rio Ave attracted the attention of larger clubs in Portugal, notably Benfica.
In 2015, Ederson joined Benfica, initially playing for their B team and serving as an understudy to Julio Cesar. He swiftly progressed, becoming Benfica’s first-choice goalkeeper during the 2016/17 season. During this period, he played a pivotal role in Benfica securing a double, winning both the league title and the cup. His exceptional reflexes, precise distribution with his left foot, and ability to quickly nullify threats became hallmarks of his playing style, earning him popularity among Benfica supporters. His performances led to a significant transfer to Manchester City in July 2017.
Ederson’s tenure at Manchester City saw him become an integral component of the team’s success. In his debut season, he contributed to the Blues’ Premier League title victory and was nominated for the PFA Young Player of the Year award in 2018. He signed a new contract with Manchester City in May 2018, extending his commitment until 2025. Following a successful career at Manchester City, Ederson transferred to Fenerbahçe on September 2, 2025, where he continues to demonstrate his goalkeeping prowess.
