Eli Stokols was born in 1978 or 1979 and grew up in Irvine, California, the son of Jeannette J. Stokols and Daniel S. Stokols. He graduated from University High School in Irvine in 1997. Stokols continued his education at the University of California, Berkeley, where he also pitched for the Cal baseball team. In 2002, he earned an M.S. degree from the Columbia University Graduate School of Journalism.

While in Denver, he also hosted ‘#COpolitics: From the Source,’ a weekly interview show. From 2013 to 2014, he contributed to 5280 magazine. His national reporting career began with Politico, which he joined in spring 2016. He then moved to The Wall Street Journal’s Washington bureau in March 2017, where he covered the 2016 presidential campaign and the Trump White House.
