Emery Moorehead, born on March 22, 1954, in Evanston, Illinois, began his notable football career at Evanston Township High School, earning All-State honors as a running back. He continued his athletic and academic pursuits at the University of Colorado, showcasing his versatility by playing both running back and wide receiver. He completed his college career with 231 rushing yards, 40 receptions for 751 yards, and six touchdowns, while also captaining the 1976 Big Eight Championship team and earning a B.A. in Communications. His early career highlighted adaptability and strong leadership qualities, setting a foundation for his future endeavors both on and off the field.
Moorehead was drafted by the New York Giants in the sixth round of the 1977 NFL Draft, where he played as a wide receiver and fullback until 1979. He then spent a season with the Denver Broncos in 1980 before joining the Chicago Bears in 1981. With the Bears, he transitioned to tight end and held the starting position for seven consecutive years, culminating in a Super Bowl XX victory in 1985. His 12-season NFL career concluded with 224 receptions, 2,980 receiving yards, and 15 touchdowns. After retiring from professional football in 1988, Moorehead successfully transitioned into the real estate industry, beginning in 1986 with Koenig & Strey Realtors.
Beyond his sports and business achievements, Moorehead has been recognized for his community involvement and leadership. He was inducted into the Chicagoland Sports Hall of Fame in 1999 and served as a director. He also holds the distinction of being part of the NFL’s first father-son duo to both play in and win Super Bowls, alongside his son Aaron Moorehead. Emery has dedicated significant time to philanthropy, including serving on the Board of Directors of the Northeast Illinois Council of Boy Scouts since 1989, having earned the rank of Eagle Scout in 1969 and receiving the Distinguished Eagle Scout Award in 2012. He continues to offer motivational speaking engagements, drawing on his experiences in football, business, and community service.
