About

Emily Bergl was born Anne Emily Bergl on April 25, 1975, in Milton Keynes, Buckinghamshire, England. Her family moved to the United States when she was six, eventually settling in Glenview, Illinois. She graduated Phi Beta Kappa from Grinnell College in 1997 with a Bachelor of Arts degree in English and theatre. Her professional acting career began in theater, notably appearing in a production of “Romeo and Juliet” in San Diego in 1998. This foundation in stage work preceded her entry into film, where she quickly took on significant roles.

Bergl gained recognition for her lead role as Rachel Lang in the 1999 supernatural horror film “The Rage: Carrie 2.” Following this, she appeared in various television series, including “Gilmore Girls” (2001–2003) as Francie Jarvis and “Star Trek: Enterprise” (2003). A notable milestone in her career was a major role in Steven Spielberg’s 2002 miniseries “Taken,” which showcased her ability to handle complex characters in a high-profile production. Her television career continued to expand with roles in “CSI: Miami,” “Medium,” and “Law & Order: Criminal Intent.” From 2006 to 2008, she held a co-starring role as Annie O’Donnell in the ABC series “Men in Trees,” further solidifying her presence in episodic television.

Her career progression includes consistent work on prominent shows such as “Desperate Housewives” (2010–2012) as Beth Young, “Shameless” (2014–2015) as Sammi Slott, and “American Crime” (2016–2017) as Lilah Tanner. More recently, she played Tessie on “The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel” from 2018 to 2023. Bergl has also maintained an active theater career, starring opposite Sean Hayes in the Broadway play “Good Night, Oscar” in 2023, for which she received a Drama Desk award nomination. She is slated to appear opposite Jonathan Groff in the Broadway musical “Just in Time” in 2025 and in the upcoming film “The History of Sound.” Beyond acting, Emily Bergl has also established herself as a cabaret singer, performing in premier clubs and releasing “Emily Bergl Live at the Algonquin.”
