Eric William Fisher was born on January 5, 1991, in Rochester, Michigan. He attended Stoney Creek High School, where he was recognized as an All-State honorable mention lineman. Initially considered undersized, weighing 225 pounds in high school, he developed into a top prospect. Fisher played college football at Central Michigan University from 2009 to 2012. During his time there, he earned first-team All-American honors from Pro Football Weekly, a second-team selection from Sports Illustrated, and third-team honors from the Associated Press. He was also a first-team All-Mid-American Conference (MAC) selection in 2012 and participated in two bowl wins: the 2010 GMAC Bowl and the 2012 Little Caesars Pizza Bowl. His strong collegiate performance led to significant attention from NFL scouts.
Fisher was the first overall pick in the 2013 NFL Draft by the Kansas City Chiefs, becoming the first MAC player to achieve this distinction. He signed a guaranteed contract worth $22.1 million with a $14.5 million signing bonus. He initially played right tackle before transitioning to left tackle in 2014 following Branden Albert’s departure. Despite early struggles, including allowing 7 sacks and 35 hurries in his rookie season, Chiefs General Manager John Dorsey expressed confidence in his potential. In 2016, Fisher signed a four-year contract extension worth $48 million, including $40 million guaranteed, reflecting the team’s belief in his role.
His career with the Chiefs saw significant achievements, including two Pro Bowl selections in 2018 and 2020. A pivotal moment came in 2020 when he caught a two-yard touchdown pass, marking the first receiving touchdown by a number one overall pick since Keyshawn Johnson in 2006. Fisher was part of the Kansas City Chiefs team that won Super Bowl LIV in 2019, their first championship in 50 years. He was released by the Chiefs in March 2021 after eight seasons. He then played for the Indianapolis Colts in 2021 and signed with the Miami Dolphins in 2022, where he was placed on injured reserve before appearing in a game. Fisher officially declared free agency on March 14, 2023.
