Richard Mark Burnett, known as Richie ‘The Prince of Wales’ Burnett, was born on February 7, 1967, in Cwmparc, Treorchy, Wales. He began his darts career in 1983 and gained prominence shortly after the split in the game between the PDC and BDO organizations. Burnett quickly secured various BDO titles in 1994, including the Dutch Open, Welsh Open, British Matchplay, and Denmark Open. His early career culminated in winning the Winmau World Masters in 1994, followed by the 1995 BDO World Darts Championship in his debut year at the event, where he defeated Raymond van Barneveld 6–3 in sets. He reached the BDO World Championship final two more times, in 1996 and 1998.
Burnett transitioned to the PDC circuit in 1999, having first competed in a challenge match against Phil Taylor in 1997. His PDC career highlights include reaching the semi-finals of the 1997 and 2000 World Matchplay, and the final of the 2001 World Matchplay, where he again faced Phil Taylor. He also made it to the quarter-finals of the PDC World Championship in 2002 and 2003. Despite a period of declining form and world rankings, he experienced a resurgence from 2010 to 2014, including a semi-final appearance at the 2011 World Grand Prix and winning his first PDC Pro Tour title in September 2011. He participated in the World Cup of Darts for Wales in 2012, 2013, and 2014, reaching the semi-finals twice.
After an 18-month ban due to a positive cocaine test in 2014, Burnett made a comeback to competitive darts in May 2016, winning two Challenge Tour tournaments. He regained his PDC Tour Card in 2017. In a notable return to form, he reached the quarter-finals of the 2023 UK Open, defeating world number two Peter Wright before his elimination.
