About

Erik Weihenmayer was born on September 23, 1968, in Princeton, New Jersey. Diagnosed with juvenile retinoschisis at 15 months, he was expected to be blind by age 13. His early life involved moves, including to Hong Kong, where he attended school from grades 2-6. Despite losing his sight, Weihenmayer resisted using a cane or learning Braille initially, preferring to adapt to the sighted world. Upon returning to the U.S., his family settled in Connecticut. He later found success in wrestling, captaining his high school team and representing Connecticut in the National Junior Freestyle Wrestling Championship. At age 16, he began using a guide dog and discovered rock climbing, excelling naturally at the tactile challenges it presented. He pursued higher education at Boston College, earning a double major in English and Communications. He then obtained a master’s degree in education from Lesley University, and started his professional career as a 5th-grade teacher at Phoenix Country Day School for six years, where he taught English and Math and coached wrestling. It was during this time that his passion for adventure began to define his path.

Weihenmayer’s adventure career began with significant mountaineering achievements. He completed his first major mountain climb, Denali, in 1995. In a historic feat on May 25, 2001, he became the first blind person to reach the summit of Mount Everest, an accomplishment that earned him global recognition, including a cover story in Time magazine. This achievement was further cemented with his completion of the Seven Summits in September 2002, joining a select group of mountaineers, yet being the only blind climber among them. He further extended this by adding Carstensz Pyramid in 2008, completing the Eight Summits. Beyond peaks, Weihenmayer made the first blind ascent of the 3,000-foot Nose of El Capitan in Yosemite in 1996 and ascended Losar, an 820-meter vertical ice face in the Himalayas in 2008.

In September 2014, Weihenmayer continued to push personal boundaries by kayaking the entire 277 miles of the Grand Canyon alongside blinded Navy veteran Lonnie Bedwell, navigating one of the world’s most challenging whitewater environments. This journey was chronicled in his book, “No Barriers: A Blind Man’s Journey to Kayak the Grand Canyon.” He co-founded the nonprofit organization No Barriers in 2005, which aims to help people with diverse backgrounds and abilities overcome challenges and live a “No Barriers Life.” This organization hosts annual events like the No Barriers Summit and offers specialized programs such as No Barriers Warriors, which supports injured veterans, and No Barriers Youth, which provides enriching experiences for young people. Weihenmayer continues to be a prominent worldwide speaker, focusing on resilience, teamwork, and the importance of a “No Barriers Life.”
