Erik Weihenmayer

On May 25, 2001, Erik Weihenmayer made history as the first blind person to reach the summit of Mount Everest, an accomplishment that garnered global recognition including a cover story in Time magazine on June 11, 2001. This monumental feat followed his ascent of Denali in 1995 and the first blind ascent of the 3,000-foot Nose of El Capitan in Yosemite in 1996. Prior to his full-time adventure career, Erik earned degrees from Boston College (English and Communications) and Lesley University (master’s in education). He also served six years as a 5th-grade teacher at Phoenix Country Day School, teaching English, Math, and coaching wrestling.

In 2017, Men’s Journal recognized his enduring impact by naming him one of ‘The 25 Most Adventurous Men of the Past 25 Years’. Through the No Barriers organization, Erik hosts annual events like the No Barriers Summit and spearheads specialized programs such as No Barriers Warriors, supporting injured veterans, and No Barriers Youth, offering enriching experiences for young people. His inspirational journey and message of resilience continue to make him a prominent worldwide speaker, advocating a ‘No Barriers Life.’ Most recently, Erik Weihenmayer was featured in the 2023 film, Life is Climbing, further amplifying his message of possibility and perseverance to global audiences.
